County Limerick native Hannah Quinn Mulligan (24) has beaten stiff competition to work as a trainee producer with the BBC.

Hannah from Croom, Co Limerick was the only applicant from the Republic of Ireland to be shortlisted for interview from a pool of 4,500 applicants.

A graduate of Crescent Comprehensive, Trinity College with a Masters from UL, Hannah has recently completed “Leading LYTs “, a youth initiative programme that aims to equip young adults with the skills required to become Co.Limerick Youth Theatre (Co.LYT) facilitators.

She strongly believes this programme gave her the experience to secure the much sought after position.

“I’ve been offered my dream job. This journey started last year in Lough Gur with a training programme that enabled me to find work as a facilitator and short film director in my home county of Limerick.  It was this work that I spoke about during the interview process with the BBC. Without the wealth of experience I gained as a facilitator, I would not have had anything to recommend me in these interviews, and my dream job would still just be a dream,” a thrilled Hannah commented.

Fiona Quinn ‘Leading LYTs’ facilitator commented, “Young people learn so much through non-formal learning, that they seldom realise what they’ve learnt. Youth initiative programmes encourage young people to discover their own competence and skills through non-formal learning. It also helps them to both recognise and enhance these skills in the wider community. The ‘Leading LYT’s’ participants had ownership of the course, and because of this they could direct themselves into their own spheres of interest, as Hannah did with film.”

Sheila Deegan, Arts Officer with Limerick City and County Council commented; “Fantastic news. Congratulations, Hannah and Fiona.Take a bow!”

‘Leading LYTs’ were also involved in a European Integration Fund project which helps newly arrived migrants from outside the EU to integrate well into Irish Society.  ‘Leading LYT’s’ used youth theatre as a vehicle for getting young people to discuss similarities and differences in a safe place where their ideas could be explored through drama.

The result of this discussion and idea sharing was a play, exploring themes of racism, belonging, migration and integration. The participants were invited to perform the play at City Hall where they met Shay Moloney from Limerick Youth Services who expressed an interest in producing the play as a short film. Filming took place in April with CoLYT, The International Youth Theatre, Friars Gate Theatre & Arts, Limerick Youth Service and Limerick County Council support, with funding provided by Pobal and Léargas.

The final product entitled ‘The Myth of Us’ aims to open the floor for young people to discuss their ideas, thoughts and feelings on issues such as race, equality and belonging.  The Myth of Us will be available to schools nationwide to use as a tool for group discussions and to promote anti-racism.
