Limerick Going for Gold Short Story Competition asks ‘How would you make Limerick a better place?’

Last week, Primary and Secondary students and the Mayor of Limerick launched one of the biggest competitions ever run for Limerick Schools.  The short story competition is part of the new schools category in the Going for Gold initiative where students are invited to write a short story with the theme ‘How would you make Limerick a better place?’ The competition is following on from last year’s hugely successful ‘Design a lapel pin’ category, where 11 year old Anna Kinsella from St Patrick’s Girls Schools’ winning design was made into a lapel pin and distributed throughout Limerick. The short story competition has a prize fund of €10,000 and will run for five weeks. The competition is open to primary, secondary and third level students. The entries will be judged by renowned Author and Professor of Creative Writing in University of Limerick, Joseph O’Connor and the winning story will be published in the Limerick Leader newspaper. Sue Ann Foley, Director of the JP McManus Benevolent Fund tells me; “this is a very exciting competition as part of the Going for Gold campaign and it is an opportunity for all young people in Limerick to show their creative and literary talents. It is an honour that Joseph O’Connor has agreed to be judge and it makes this a true literary contest for the youth of our county. We hope as many students as possible take part and we look forward to reading the entries.” Posters promoting the competition and letters to all school principals and colleges in Limerick have been distributed this week.
