A theatre performance devised and performed by the people of Moyross about Moyross came to the Lime Tree Theatre the end of this month as part of the Made in Limerick funding strand of Limerick City of Culture 2014.

Moyross is the single largest housing estate throughout the UK & Ireland. Built in the early 1970’s, social infrastructure was not provided by the state for the area. As a result of this, Moyross has been the subject of pejorative discussion within the public arena for some time now. The combined housing estates have made the headlines time and again, and for the most, for all the wrong reasons. What is lacking from the media coverage are actual stories and personal opinions from the amazing people who live there. These people’s voices are being kept muted and they are essentially being denied of their freedom of expression about the area and its positives which are hidden from the majority of the public-eye because of intolerant media discourse. MOYROSS sets out to rectify this by giving a voice to this active, lively and vibrant community.

Award winning THEATREclub have worked with and within the community of Moyross for five weeks to help devise a show which will be performed in the Lime Tree Theatre at the end of April. This production will illustrate the differences between the realism of  people’s lives in Moyross and the stereotypical headlines created by the media. It will focus on the history of the estates, stories and experiences from people who live there and memories from its older generations gone-by.

The theatre production will be aided by community workers and also by academic experts specalising in the area of social policy. However, the performance will be solely devised and performed by the local residents of Moyross, Limerick.

Performance details at the Lime Tree Theatre:

So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
