The UL Soccer Club have been around since day one of the University and this year the club have their eyes set on winning the Collingwood cup. The Collingwood cup is the premier competition of college soccer and it is going into its 101st year and is being held in National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG).

Hopes are high this year for the UL Soccer Club, as they feel that this year’s team is one of the strongest the University have seen. The team did well in the league which was held just before Christmas. UL had good wins over teams such as Cork IT (UL 8- CIT 0) and University College Cork (UL 4- UCC 1). They ended up finishing second in the Premier South League campaign which ensured their quarter-final against UCD.

The quarter-final against UCD will be a challenging one, as they’re considered one of the strongest teams in college soccer. Although, confidence is high in the UL camp this year, they feel that “they are there to be beaten as well” says Chairman Jamie Flynn. He also feels that the club are out to “prove themselves at the highest level”.

This year’s UL Soccer team is being led by Ian Sullivan- Manager and Mick McCarthy- Head Coach, with help from plenty of background staff. They will be training on UL’s 3G Astro pitch on the north of campus in preparation of the Collingwood cup. UL are hopeful that this year could be the first time in UL history that they win the Collingwood cup.

When it comes to funding, UL Soccer Club receive most of their funding from hosting fundraising nights such as the Take Me Out night, which was held last year and received great support. They also receive funding from Clubs and Societies in UL and UL’s Sports Department. They are open to any sponsorships and would be grateful of the extra support towards the team’s drive for the Collingwood cup.

The UL Soccer Club currently has an estimate of 250-300 members at the time and would welcome any new members to the club. Student or not, UL Soccer Club welcome you to join at any time during the season. With nine active teams, they have various men’s teams, fresher’s teams, lady’s teams and also a futsal team.

If you wish to join the UL Soccer Club or sponsor the team, you can E-mail them on [email protected] or you can join them on their Facebook page at UL Soccer Club Official Page. Come along and show your support and drive the UL team on in their hope of securing the Collingwood cup.
