To celebrate National Volunteering Week 2015, on Friday 15th May Limerick Volunteer Centre joined forces with Serve the City for a Community Clean-up Day in Limerick City.  A team of 12 willing volunteers braved the rain in order to take part.

The morning was spent with St Munchin’s Community Centre where the volunteers painted the Community Garden Allotments in Ballynanty and helped to freshen up the garden in time for summer.

These community allotments are a fantastic resource for the local community.  For only €20 a year, the allotments are available to local residents and are used to grow fruit and vegetables and promote healthy interaction in the community.   Linda Ledger, manager of St Munchin’s Community Centre said “the allotments are a fantastic educational tool for the children of the local community who are learning about importance of healthy eating and how to grow their own fresh produce”.

Once the work in the garden in Ballynanty was complete, the volunteer team travelled to Garryowen and spent the afternoon carrying out a litterpick with the help of a few local volunteers including some children from the Garryowen youth club.

“The day was a massive success” said Salena Grace from Limerick Volunteer Centre.  “The aim of National Volunteer Week is to celebrate the dedicated work of volunteers across Ireland but also to inspire others to take part!  The interest shown by the local children in the Community Clean-up Day and their desire to help was encouraging … perhaps we may have helped to inspire the volunteers of tomorrow!”
