Keith Blake is an artist from Tipperary is a recent graduate of The Limerick School of Art and Design with a BA in Fine Art (Painting). Blake uses the mediums of photography and painting and is interested in what Caroline Wake Bynum calls the ‘somatic quality’ of female mystics and how the body of the female mystic is interpreted. Bynum tells us that the miracles imposed upon female mystics differed than those of their male contemporaries in that these miracles manifested themselves bodily as opposed to psychologically.

Olivia Furey is a visual artist based in Limerick. Her interest in music and contemporary culture inspires her art. As a feminist, she is concerned with the lack of visibility of women in rock music and the different experiences of oppression every woman faces. Olivia works with paintings, zines and performance to translate these issues through her work.

Olivia describes the exhibition as “an art installation of feminist punk zines. The zines are inspired by my interest in music, contemporary culture and my own opinions as a feminist. I am trying to provoke alternative ways of thinking by making statements about issues in the music industry, the lack of visibility of women in rock music and I also tackle several different issues regarding women’s rights, such as repealing the 8th Amendment, street harassment and body shaming. There is another artist featured in the exhibition, Keith Blake. There will be an event night for the show on Friday the 13th of January, everyone is welcome to attend. I will be doing a performance on the night and there will also be performances from Chris from Cruiser and Anna’s Anchor (all Limerick acts).”

The FemaleMystic exhibition will be taking place from the eighth of December to the twenty-first of January from 10am to 5pm at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles.
