New Limerick Mayors elected for City and County as well as the Metropolitan District.
Councillor Kieran O Hanlon becomes the first representative of the city to be elected as mayor of Limerick City and County since the council’s amalgamation in 2014.
The Fianna Fáil Councillor succeeds Cllr Liam Galvin of Fine Gael and is the third Mayor in as many years since the two local authorities merged in 2014. In the last local election, Cllr Kieran O Hanlon was elected to the third seat of the now eight-seat constituency with almost 1000 first preference votes.
Cllr O Hanlon has spent over 25 years serving in local politics and has previously held the title Limerick’s First Citizen and has been a member of Fianna Fáil since 1998, previously being part of the Progressive Democrat Party.
Speaking of his time spent as Mayor of Limerick City and County, Cllr Liam Galvin said it was the best year of his life. Adding how his role as the mayor of both Limerick City and County has allowed him to get to know the City in a way he had previously never known it.
“It is a beautiful, beautiful city, and I don’t think people realise it,” he said, speaking as a person living in West Limerick who previously visited the city for short trips.
In the Metropolitan District of Limerick City, Cllr Michael Hourigan representing Fine Gael has been elected as the district mayor and was succeeded by Fianna Fáil Cllr Jerry O Dea.
Cllr Hourigan was elected after receiving 11 of the possible 19 votes, competing with Cllr Elena Secas of Labor, Cllr paul Keller of the Anti-Austerity Alliance and Malachy McCreash of Sinn Féin.
Councillor Hourigan was nominated by his party colleague, Cllr Michael Sheahan and was seconded by Fianna Fáil representative Cllr James Collins. After his election, the Metropolitan District Mayor vowed to work hard and diligently during his term in office and called on all other elected members to work together for the city centre over the next year.
