Robert Cunningham wins Anti Stigma award for documentary ‘TRANSition’

TRANSition tells the story of Danny, a young transgender man as he very honestly and emotionally speaks about his experiences .

Robert Cunningham, Limerick filmmaker recently won the Anti-Stigma Award at the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival for his documentary film ‘TRANSition’. Robert attended the awards ceremony, which took place in Glasgow on the October 11, as part of Mental Health Week, to accept the award. The documentary was praised by organization See Me (a Scottish organization who work to end mental health stigma and discrimination, enabling people who experience mental health problems to live fulfilled lives) for its treatment of body dysphoria & transgender experiences.

TRANSition tells the story of Danny, a young transgender man as he very honestly and emotionally speaks about his experiences growing up as a girl, knowing that was not who he was. TRANSition is an honest and inspiring account of someone being brave enough to be true to themselves despite the obstacles.

TRANSition has received an Official Selection as part of the Short Film programme for the upcoming Richard Harris International Film Festival in Limerick. It will be screened on Saturday, October 29 in the 12pm-1.30pm Short Film programme in the Belltable.

Robert attended the awards ceremony, which took place in Glasgow on the October 11, as part of Mental Health Week.

TRANSition has also won the Next Generation Student Short Documentary award at Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival, Kells Co. Meath. As well as receiving Semi-Finalist selections at both the Los Angeles CineFest and Highway 61 Film Festival (Minnesota). TRANSition was previously shortlisted for the Galway Fringe Festival as part of the Film on the Edge programme (July ’16) and has received an official selection for the CINEPLAY Film Awards 2016, a New York based competition, finals in December.

Since graduating from LCFE (Limerick College of Further Education) in April 2016 Robert Cunningham has co-founded Gazette Films Limerick, an independent film production company based in Limerick with Sandra Sheehan.

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online.
