The National Platform of Self Advocates Limerick meeting to be held on June 30.

National Platform of Self Advocates is inviting all self-advocates from the Munster and Connaught region to a meeting in Limerick on June 30 at Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT).

The National Platform of Self Advocates is a group of people living with a disability who work together to make the lives of those living with disabilities better. The National Platform is open to all people with a disability from all over Ireland and has been operating as a group since 2011.

The National Platform of Self Advocates is the first organisation of its kind in Ireland and is funded by Atlantic Philanthropies since September 2015. This funding has made it possible for the organisation to hire two staff as well as enabled them to work on their three-year strategic plan.

The aim of the National Platform of Self Advocates Limerick meeting is to speak to other self-advocates about the work the National Platform does and to inform the people how they can be involved in the organisation.

This meeting is part one of a three-part plan which aims to make the voice of the National Platform members stronger. The National Platform of Self Advocates Limerick meeting will take place in The Limerick Institute of Technology on Thursday, 30 June at 11 am and will run until 1pm.

The National Platform strategic plan consists of three goals:

Goal one is to ‘make the voice of the platform stronger’ by getting the platform known and recognised nationally, by building a relationship with other disability groups in Ireland and by connecting with people who have a disability.

Goal two is to make the lives of people with a disability better. The platform aims to do this by making sure people with a disability have an adequate service in Ireland and by encouraging people in places of power to improve the lives of people with a disability.

Goal three is for the platform to become an independent organisation to show that people with a disability run the National Platform for the people. By agreeing on what type of organisation the National Platform wants to be and by becoming independent in thought and policies the organisation aims to accomplish this.

Five percent of the population of counties Limerick and Clare live with an intellectual disability. Adding family members who support their children/siblings and those that provide services to enable people with an intellectual disability to live a full life within the community means a sizable portion of the population are affected by intellectual disability. 

The National Platform of Self Advocates is an independent organisation. The committee representing the members was elected by their peers to represent all adults living with an intellectual disability in Ireland. 

Inclusion Ireland and The National University of Galway’s department of Disability Policy and Law support the National Platform of Self Advocates.
