800,000 Euro MIC Funding supports available for postgraduate research
Mary Immaculate College is a long established provider of world-class postgraduate programmes in Education and the Liberal Arts at Diploma, Masters and Doctoral (PhD) levels. According to Professor Jim Deegan, Head of Graduate School at MIC: “Grounded in decades of scholarship in Education and the Liberal Arts, students experience responsive research supervision and mentoring, funding and career development support schemes, and a first-class “community of practice” in the new purpose-designed graduate research and study facility on the John Henry Newman Campus at Mary Immaculate College.” In order to help meet the real world needs and costs of postgraduate research students, The college receives 800,000 euro MIC funding per annum through its Departmental Assistantships Scheme and merit-based Research Masters and Doctoral Awards Scheme.
Mary Immaculate College systematically builds for student success by providing panel-based monitoring at review and progression points and a wide range of transferable skills training such as academic writing, project management, research integrity and ethical conduct, distributed leadership, and presentation and conference skills. Postgraduate students can enjoy the centuries-old doctoral seminar and colloquium format in combination with innovative masterclasses and summer schools, supported by research supervisors who maintain their own continuing postgraduate training and development portfolios in graduate education and research.

Professor Deegan points out that long-established programmes such as the MA and PhD in Arts and the MA and PhD in Education in combination with new programmes such as the Structured PhD in Education, the Structured PhD in Applied Linguistics, and the Structured PhD in International Development Education and Practice, among others, have widened and diversified participation beyond Ireland, the UK and EU to students from the Brazil, Nigeria, Tanzania, France, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and China.
In addition, Mary Immaculate College offers a wide and diverse range of taught programmes in Education and the Liberal Arts at Diploma, Masters and Professional Doctoral levels. Programmes include specialised taught MA programmes in Language and English Literature, Media Studies, Gaeilge, Philosophy, Theology, German Studies, and History, amongst others. In the Faculty of Education, students in MIC’s renowned Masters of Education programmes develop knowledge and understanding in specialist areas such as special educational needs, information and communication technologies and early childhood care and education. The Faculty of Education also offers a range of programmes including Masters Programmes in Music Education, Education and the Well-Being of the Older Person and Education and the Arts as well as a Certificate in Adult and Further Education and a Graduate Diploma/ M. Ed. in Information and Communication Technologies in Primary Education and a Graduate Certificate in Autism Studies.
