Irish College Societies (BICS) Awards 2017

Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) Awards 2017 over 400 staff and students from colleges across Ireland took part in the annual Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) Awards 2017 held at the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone. This event sees student college societies, from all over the country, compete against each other for 20 awards in 13 different categories. One of the major highlights in the college calendar, these awards celebrate the unyielding work students do to create a greater, more enjoyable and more holistic college life for their peers. This year’s awards were in partnership with Please Talk, Partridge Peartree, USI & Comhlámh. For the second year Please Talk have been on board sponsoring the Best Mental Health Promoting Event. BICS have also recently been awarded Supporter status with Comhlámh. Comhámh is an organisation which supports charity and civic organisations that are involved with social justice, human rights and global development issues. The Comhlámh Code of Good Practice for volunteer Sending Agencies ensures that international volunteering has a positive impact on the volunteer and the host community.

This year UL Students’ Union Societies came home with a whopping 4 National Society Awards.

Winners:

2017 Best Individual (Large College)

University of Limerick – Michael Donnell

Michael was president and founder of the Science Society and contributed to the campus and local community through his outreach programme and multiple charitable works.

 

 

 

2017 Best Mental Health Event

UL Dramsoc, Stigma

Stigma was a hard hitting mental health showcase, aimed at reducing the stigma around real world mental illnesses. The showcase had 28 individual performers. Their survivor stories were short stories written about people’s own struggles with mental illness, their day to day battles, how they’re coping and how they managed to see the light on the other side. Some of the pieces were much lighter than others and they structured it in such a way that the audience left the auditorium feeling hopeful and assured that all wars must end eventually.  It was their first ever full charity showcase, the proceeds were donated to Pieta House and Corbett Suicide Prevention Limerick.

UL Drama

WARRIOR ‘Performed by Emma Craven, Written & Directed by Laura Hunt, Camera & Sound by Kerrie Ahern and Lighting by Ellen Culloo. It was written in the style of the Survivor stories which featured in Stigma and was shot in the student union.

The Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) is a national organisation and is dedicated to providing a forum for the societies in Ireland’s Universities, Colleges and institutes of Education. Since its inception, BICS has grown in year on year and now represents 21 colleges, 901 societies with 180,000 students across Ireland. BICS acts as an information resource and support mechanism for society administrators throughout the country promoting the sharing of ideas and the implementation of best practice.
