Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Heather Humphreys made the announcement as part of the Creative Ireland programme, with funding provided under her Department’s Arts and Culture Capital Scheme 2016-2018.

Limerick is to receive almost €1 million of the €9 million announced under this scheme.

Two of the Limerick projects (Hunt Museum and Fidget Feet / Irish Aerial Creation Centre) have been classified as flagship projects and will receive substantial funding of €400,000 and €350,000 respectively.  (Nationally, there are seven flagship projects in total).

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon said: “Today’s announcement is fantastic news for the organisations involved.  The money will be used to upgrade and improve facilities for visitors and staff alike.  I especially note that Limerick has been hugely successful in gaining around €1 million of the €9 million available.”

“Culture and the arts are very important in our society and these grants will allow the necessary infrastructure to be improved and transformed.”

Josephine Cotter Coughlan, Director of Services in Limerick City and County Council said: “Limerick City and County Council is extremely pleased that Limerick has secured almost a million euro to maintain and enhance the five organisations which will improve the audience and creative experience in Limerick.”

“This funding will assist us in our mission to mainstream creativity in the life of our communities in Limerick so that individually and collectively in our personal lives and in our institutions, we can realise our full creative potential, as envisioned in our Cultural Strategy.”

“A number of very important cultural facilities will benefit from the grants.  The funding will help increase access to and participation in the arts, boost our creative industries and preserve our heritage here in Limerick.”

Sheila Deegan, Arts Officer with Limerick City and County Council said: “When the call out for the capital scheme was announced by the Minister in July 2016, Limerick responded with nine applications with the support of Limerick City and County Council.  On hearing today that five of those were successful I am very pleased all our collective efforts have paid off.  It represents an investment of €996,097 in Limerick, a welcome investment that supports our ongoing commitment to these key cultural organisations who have time and again delivered outstanding programmes through partnership and innovation.”

“It also represents further evidence of the commitment by Limerick City and County Council to the development and sustainability of cultural organisations, a key outcome of the continued legacy of Limerick as National City of Culture and the Limerick 2020 Bid process.Limerick Arts Organisations receive almost €1 million
