Limerick Designer Marion Murphy Cooney and her Success Story

Marion Murphy Cooney, hailing from Kileely in Limerick city has been in the fashion industry since 2005. As a daughter of a painter and granddaughter of a seamstress, it is no surprise that Marion chose to pursue a career in fashion design.

While the artistic streak was always in Marion’s blood, it did take some training too. As a teenager, Marion Murphy Cooney learned to sew in an evening course in a local resource centre. Following her Leaving Cert exams, Marion was accepted to the Limerick School of Art and Design where she studied for two years. She picked up much of her marketing skills through working as a brand ambassador for a drinks company in her early 20s. Marion also worked in marketing and retail for many years before she finally bit the bullet in 2005 while expecting her second child and left her job to set up as the Marion Murphy-Cooney fashion designer we know today.

Since 2005 Marion has been building up a following both locally and nationally for her label. Having started her business in her kitchen in Limerick approximately 8 years ago. When creating her collection, Marion had real people in mind and sought to create wearable, comfortable pieces. She focused on the importance of fit and quality and providing real value pieces. Marion has since opened her own boutique, The Design Atelier, on Friar St in Nenagh, Tipperary, and has 2 labels ‘MMC by Marion Murphy-Cooney’ a ready to wear label which has been sold worldwide, and ‘Marion Murphy-Cooney’ a couture label. Marion’s designs have even reached Hollywood at the Oscars where Denise Creagh, co-producer of the acclaimed Irish nomination ‘The Crush’, wore an MMC creation.

Marion Murphy Cooney’s boutique, The Design Atelier provides Irish designed clothes, hats and accessories. The award-winning designer has seen her creations worn on not just everyday regular people but they have also been sported by celebrities on the red carpet on numerous occasions. Marion’s store features ready-to-buy pieces but the boutique also offers bespoke, made-to-measure pieces in order to cater to each clients individuality. Marion Murphy Cooney welcomes clients who wish to commission pieces for personal events, she enjoys the challenge and satisfaction of creating these entirely unique, personal and creative pieces. Through The Design Atelier, Marion is also providing an opportunity for other Irish designers to showcase and sell their own products and pieces from jewellery to accessories.

Since her success as a fashion designer, Marion Murphy Cooney has become a well-known name here in Limerick. She has dressed many other household names such as Lorraine Keane, Lisa Cannon, Glenda Gilson and Celia Holman Lee.

Marion has also been giving back to the community such as partaking in the Pieta House Ladies Night Fashion extravaganza and which took place on October 25 of last year. Marion Murphy Cooney is just one of many of Limericks leading ladies who are taking over the business and fashion world. Limerick City is ripe with successful business women who are achieving new heights and offering their positive influence on the city through their hard work and determination.
