Limerick free Confidential Paper shredding event Saturday 28 January 

A special Limerick free confidential paper shredding event is taking place to allow businesses and householders throughout Limerick drop off confidential documents to be shredded free of charge. 

The one-day event is at the Mungret Recycling Centre on Saturday 28 January 2017 from 11.00am until 3.30pm.

Limerick City and County Council in conjunction with Security in Shredding, a company that offers confidential document paper shredding services in Ireland, are facilitating the ‘Free Shred Event’ to mark European Data Protection Day 2017 and promote good waste management practices. 

Data Protection experts will also be on hand on the day to assist attendees with their data protection and waste management queries, and to provide best practice guidance for SME’s and householders when left with the responsibility to securely destroy end of life data. 

Householders and SME’s will be allowed to bring two bin bags of confidential paper material such as personal information, bills and income statements, to be shredded on site on the day.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon said: “It is very important that we continue to dispose of our rubbish in an environmentally conscious way.  This is crucially important when it comes to personal information.  Nobody wants to become a victim of identity theft and this event run jointly by Limerick City and County Council and Security in Shredding is an ideal opportunity to dispose of highly personal and confidential information in a proper manner.” 

Sinead McDonnell, Environmental Awareness Officer with Limerick City and County Council said: “The purpose of this event is twofold – firstly, it will create awareness of Data Protection and enable attendees who may not have facilities or funds for such a service to ensure secure destruction of their data.  Secondly, waste brought to Mungret Recycling Centre will improve the waste recycling figures for the region and consequently reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.” 

Albert Kelly of Security in Shredding said: “The existing Data Protection legislation is in place to ensure that everyone’s rights to privacy are protected.  One of the regulations stipulates that businesses and other organisations do not retain files for longer than it is necessary and that all material past its sell by date is regularly purged, shredded and destroyed.  The safe and appropriate destruction of confidential papers also minimises the risk of identity theft.  As Data Protection fines increase up to 80 times higher for noncompliance, professional confidential shredding has become an essential activity for businesses today.” 

“This event in Mungret will allow SMEs to be confident that they are following the letter of law when it comes to the destruction of confidential material.” 

“It is also very important that homeowners, and people in general, realise the importance of getting rid of documents with personal information correctly.  A Eurobarometer report in 2015 on Cybercrime in Ireland found that 10% of Irish Internet users were the victims of bank card fraud, 9% of Irish Internet users have been the victims of identity theft and 7% were victims of Ransomware,” he added. 

Limerick Chamber is also supporting the initiative which will help businesses understand their responsibilities when it comes to Data Protection. 

Maura McMahon, from Limerick Chamber, said: “I would encourage SME’s to avail of this offer and take the opportunity to have confidential information shredded and managed correctly.  There will be experts present throughout the day to advise businesses about how best to manage their confidential information.”
