The teens, Aaron O’ Halloran, Evan Madigan and Anthony McNamara, are members of LYS’s Irishtown Garda Youth Diversion Project and have a great interested in mixed martial arts (MMA).

‘One of our programmes at Irishtown GYDP challenged the group to make better use of their spare time and pick up new hobbies,’ explained LYS’s Priscilla Sheehan, when asked to explain how the trip developed.

‘Anthony (McNamara) read John Kavanagh’s autobiography and was impressed with John’s words on the importance of using psychology and positive mental attitude in sport and life,’ said Priscilla, Youth Justice Worker with Irishtown GYDP.

Learning how impressed Anthony was with the book and the positive impact it was having on the group, the team at Irishtown set in motion a plan to have the young people visit Straight Blast Gym.

On arriving the trio were put through their paces by John and enjoyed a workout in a MMA standard octagon also known as the ‘eight-sided ring!’

John spoke with Aaron, Anthony and Evan about the important role physical activity can play in a person’s physical and mental health with the trio sharing their thoughts on growing up in modern Ireland and the challenges they face.

‘It was an amazing experience and to be one of the few to visit Conor McGregor’s private gym ahead of his fight with Mayweather was a great privilege,’ said Priscilla.

Priscila thanked everyone who made the trip possible with a special word of thanks to Aaron, Anthony and Evan who were great ambassadors for LYS and their peers.

Irishtown GYDP is located at John’s Square and is one three such projects supported by Limerick Youth Service, An Garda Siochana and the Irish Youth Justice Service.

A member of Youth Work Ireland, Limerick Youth Service remains committed to supporting and encouraging young people to be active participants in shaping their futures.
