Rathkeale Youth Cafe Turns One

Rathkeale Youth Cafe, Rathkeale’s only dedicated youth café, celebrated its first birthday recently and as the team reflected on their maiden year it’s safe to say it’s been busy!

Located at Limerick Youth Service’s Rathkeale Youth Space, Rathkeale Youth Cafe has become a firm favourite with teenagers with many coming from neighbouring towns such as Ballingarry and Patrickswell to spend time at the popular space.

As members of Rathkeale Youth Cafe, young people can take part in exiting youth work programmes, play pool, Xbox or simply hang out with friends. ‘It’s been an amazing first year and the young people deserve great credit for developing the youth café,’ said a very proud Mary Harty, Limerick Youth Service. Throughout the year members of the Rathkeale Youth Cafe have taken part in numerous activities and have been to the fore in promoting and advocating for young people in West Limerick. ‘Five of our members recently graduated from Limerick Youth Service’s Junior Leadership Training Programme with others taking part in Youth Work Ireland’s #Equality17 workshops,’ added Mary, youth worker, Rathkeale Youth Space. The young people have also promoted #calmdeseshbefresh, an alcohol awareness Mannequin Challenge produced and written by Transition Year students from Coláiste Na Trócaire, Rathkeale. Behind the RK Youth Café is the youth committee of Amy Kerins, Matthew Cronin, Shauna Dillon, Rebecca Russell, Samantha Power and Dylan Byrnes.

‘The youth committee has been working hard on recruiting new members, organising celebrations and deciding on activities,’ explained Mary adding that Matthew is a member of Youth Work Ireland’s youth board and Limerick Comhairle na nÓg. Looking to the future Mary invited teenagers (14-18yrs) to pop along the RK Youth Café saying ‘we are always looking for new members so make that move- you won’t regret it!’

RK Youth Café is open each Wednesday at Rathkeale Youth Space (4-7pm) with new members always welcome. A member of Youth Work Ireland, Limerick Youth Service remains committed to supporting and encouraging young people to be active participants in shaping their futures.
