Clare’s Wish Foundation patron Red Hurley is coming to Limerick for a one-off fundraiser concert, a Red Hurley Spiritual Hits concert,’ with all proceeds going to their foundation. Guests on the night will include Eugene McCarthy band and singers, along with Unity Gospel Choir Limerick.

Clare’s Wish Foundation is a charity dedicated to granting the wishes of terminally ill adults. It was founded by Kevin Clancy in 2013 in honour of his late sister Clare, who had Spina Bifida. Clare’s Wish Foundation is currently the only Irish registered charity that grants wishes to adults with a terminal condition. To this day, Clare’s Wish Foundation has granted over 35 wishes for adults throughout the country.

“When she was a teenager, Clare was a huge fan of Red Hurley and I remember so clearly a wish come true for Clare when she finally met her hero in Dundrum, Co. Tipperary in 1978,” recalls Kevin. “Clare couldn’t believe her luck when she got to meet the singer after one of his shows. Red sang for her and also gave her a signed copy of his album, which I still have to this day. Clare’s medical condition meant she spent most of her time in her bedroom and the only thing she had was Red’s music and posters all over her wall.”

Tragically, at the age of just 24, Clare passed away in 1984. In the past years since her death, Kevin and Red Hurley have kept in contact with one another. In October 2013, Kevin informed Red of his plans to launch Clare’s Wish Foundation in memory of his sister. “Red came to our launch night and, together with Brendan Grace, took part in a special concert at the Lime Tree Theatre in Limerick in April 2014 which raised €10,500 for Clare’s Wish,” says Kevin. It was on that night that Red announced to everyone he would be a patron of the Foundation.

“Some months ago, Red asked me to come up with a plan for a special concert in 2017,” Kevin continues, “so I am delighted to say we have secured the beautiful Mount St Alphonsus church on the South Circular Road in Limerick as location for a ‘Red Hurley Spiritual Hits concert’ featuring songs of praise.”

In early May, Red Hurley called into the Clare’s Wish Foundation shop to do a meet and greet, and sign CD’s for people. It was here he launched the concert, before calling into St. Mount Alphonsus Church and 95FM for an interview about the concert.

The concert promises to be a night of great entertainment with the Eugene McCarthy band and Unity Gospel Choir. The night is also to be dedicated to the memory of one of the Wishes granted participants in 2016, Annette Flynn, who was also a member of the Unity Gospel Choir.

The fundraiser in aid of Clare’s Wish Foundation will take place on Friday, June 30, 2017, at 8.15pm. Tickets cost just €20 and will be on sale at St Mount Alphonsus church shop, the Clare’s Wishing Well charity store in Groody, and online here (€1.54 surcharge).
