UL online module to tackle the housing crisis in Ireland launched

On Wednesday, June 21  the School of Law at the University of Limerick and the Community Law and Mediation (CLM) launched the UL online module,  UL Housing Law and Policy Online.

CLM Limerick provides free legal information, advice and representation to individuals living in communities identified for regeneration, and to those living in disadvantaged areas.

 The new UL online module, which will be available online this September, was introduced in response to the ever more serious demand for housing in Ireland and the increasing attention and controversy that it is drawing at both a national and international level.

In the latest ‘Cost of Doing Business in Ireland’ report, the watchdog said there was a strong link between rising house prices and rent and wage expectations. It said that average rent nationally is now almost at the same level as the 2007 peak and at times even surpassed it.

Speaking at the launch, Ms Rose Wall, CEO of Community Law and Mediation said: “CLM are delighted to be collaborating with UL on this exciting project.  Housing Law is such an important subject, particularly in the context of the current crisis.  We hope that the course will empower those attending with knowledge of their rights and how to enforce them.  It is particularly exciting to see this course being run online making it accessible to as many people as possible.”

 Professor Shane Kilcommins, Head of the School of Law, added: “The School of Law is delighted to be teaming up with CLM in delivering this much-needed module. It is a great opportunity for us to be able to collaborate with and support colleagues who are doing such outstanding work in the housing sector for communities right across Ireland.”

 Present at the launch were representatives from various housing and homelessness charities including the Peter McVerry Trust, Novas and Paul Partnership Limerick.
