Camerata Ireland featuring Barry Douglas at UCH

University Concert Hall is delighted to welcome the orchestra, Camerata Ireland featuring Barry Douglas on piano, on Saturday February 13. Founded in 1999 by international pianist, conductor, educator and recording artist, Barry Douglas, Camerata Ireland has become a chamber orchestra of excellence to match the best in the world. It brings together the finest Irish musicians to celebrate the wealth of musical talent from within Ireland, creating a unique sound that comes from the orchestra members’ shared musical heritage.

The orchestra has gained an international reputation for excellence. Camerata Ireland has given performances throughout the USA and Europe, and in Asia. Notable successes have been the Irish Festival of Arts and Culture in China in 2004, the 2006 International Beethoven Festival in Warsaw, the Smithsonian Festival in the US Library of Congress, the Naantali International Festival in Finland in 2007 and the Festival de la Chaise-Dieu in France in 2008 and 2009. Camerata Ireland’s annual International Concert Series takes it to several major concert venues throughout Europe such as the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Cadogan Hall in London, The National Concert Hall in Dublin and the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid. Camerata Ireland was honoured to be one of the few chamber orchestras to be invited to be resident in the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, performing the complete Mozart Piano Concertos over several seasons. In March 2011 the orchestra undertook its 4th major tour of the United States which included a debut concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall. The USA tour was immediately followed by concerts in northern Spain with superstar trumpeter Alison Balsom. In May 2011 the orchestra was honoured to be invited to perform for the (former) President of Ireland, Mary McAleese and Her Majesty the Queen, as part of the latter’s historic State visit to Ireland.

Camerata Ireland has in its creator and Artistic Director, Barry Douglas, an artist who imbues the orchestra members with an energy and passion for performance and engages audiences from the first to the last note. The orchestra comprises young musicians who are in the early stages of their professional careers and established musicians who perform with the Camerata Ireland orchestra as well as other leading orchestras and ensembles across Europe. Every summer Camerata Ireland returns to its homeland to take part in the annual Clandeboye Festival held in August in the historic Clandeboye Estate. The festival has just celebrated its tenth anniversary.

This performance at University Concert Hall is presented by the Friends of UCH and the programme will feature Haydn’s Symphony No 88 in G, together with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 2 in B flat and Symphony No 4 in B flat.
