In traditional photography, the image formed by light is termed latent because of all though it is there it is not visible to the human eye; its potential has not yet been realized. A series of chemical processes must be undertaken to make the invisible/latent image visible. Between the point of exposure and development, there is an uncertainty as to how the image will appear.

The uncertainty of process is reflected in the subject matter of this body of work. Anxiety manifests itself in the uncertainty and fear of the unknown. Globally In the face of increasingly complex technical, cultural, and social changes, anxiety has become the existential, underlying feeling. A bomb is an object of mass indiscriminate destruction and symbol of the most anxiety-ridden environments. Its use as a form in this context is a play on the everyday anxieties we as individuals experience. It is a reminder that the bombs we build ourselves never achieve the potential we may imagine them to have.

The work is informed by the ability of photography to flatten 3D forms into the image. The interplay between the negative and resulting positive image is echoed in the casting process used to create the ceramic work. Through the use of precious materials like gold and porcelain the work links preciousness to anxiety. We hang onto them instead of letting them go.

Gemma Dardis is an interdisciplinary artist. She is from Westmeath and now lives and works in Limerick City. Her work examines the relationship between the three-dimensional form and the two-dimensional image through ceramics, print, and photography. In 2016 she was awarded a G.R.O. Bursary from Limerick Institute of Technology and Limerick School of Art and Design where she is currently undertaking a Research Masters Program exploring the potentials of gold nanoparticles in the creation of fired photographic ceramic images.

She is a member of Limerick Printmakers and has undertaken a number of residencies and has exhibited throughout Ireland, U.K., Europe, China and New York.
