This March, 11 in Dolan’s Limerick’s music community is coming together for a night of entertainment in aid of Pieta house. Some of Limerick’s best-known acts will be taking to the Warehouse as a fundraiser for Pieta House, one of the organisations at the front of the battle against mental illness and suicide. Excitement for Limerick Standing Up is ripe within the city with all the acts being met with critical acclaim.

Anna’s Anchor, Emma Langford, A Weekend Away, Protobaby and Men Of Twenty will be coming together to play on the night to raise money for this much-needed cause. Also on the night will be a raffle with support from local businesses. The raffle has thus far been supported by Coqbull Limerick, Limerick City Hotel and Steamboat Music.

In recent years, Pieta house in Mungret saw a 100% increase in people that were availing of their services. Caolan O’Donnell, Welfare Officer of the University of Limerick explained in a recent interview, “One in every three people experience mental health problems during their time in third level education. That’s looking left and right in a lecture.”

“Limerick City has a long, unforgiving history with suicide and mental health. The suicide rate in Limerick City (22.4/100,000) is twice the national average (10.10/100,000). These figures don’t present a problem, they present an epidemic” says organiser and University of Limerick student, Peter Corbett. “Everyone in this city has a direct or indirect history with mental health, suicide, and self-harm. This event aims to spread awareness of these prevalent and harrowing problems and contribute to the cause that Pieta House battle every day”.

“We all know what the problem is; it’s on the tip of everyone’s tongues. But we don’t talk about it. We just avoid it and let the stigma grow and grow, but that’s how the Irish operate; it’s how we work. But if we don’t create a discourse around the issue, if we don’t make advancements and we don’t talk about it as a genuine issue, then nothing will change”.

For €10, tickets for the event can be bought at the Dolan’s website or upon entrance of the event. Doors will open at 8:00 with the first act strictly starting at 8:30. The raffle includes a €50 voucher for Steamboat Music, a €50 voucher for Coqbull Limerick and a one night stay at the Limerick City Hotel including breakfast and a €20 bar voucher.
