The arts festival was officially opened by Pat Shortt who relived his memorable times on Roches Street, “It’s great to be here, I’m delighted to be here. I’ve huge memories, fond memories of Roches Street, from the mid-eighties actually. Strangely enough I learned to play saxophone on this street, I used to come up from Thurles every weekend.”

He then went on to speak of his love of art and his love of Roches Street, “It’s a fantastic, wonderful thing that’s going on here. It’s a great thing bringing art to the street and Roches street is very much the heart of the city and there is a great community kind of vibe here.”

Roches Street annual Art Festival takes place September 8 to September 13. This is the 14th year the festival has taken place and has raised over €100,000 for local charities so far.

Retailers will display the work of local artist’s.These pieces will be up for sale and 25% of each sale will go to charity. This year the art festival will benefit Limerick Marine Search & Rescue and Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association Mid-West.

Also there on the night was Mayor Michael Sheahan who made a rousing speech about the importance of positivity within the Limerick community.

“Working together we create goodness for each other. With a group of traders here on the street come together for two most needy causes that’s what it’s all about. We’ll create our own feel good factor. The message is positivity! Limerick is open for business and this is an example of it!”
