The 10th Limerick Island Swim took place on Saturday, September 14 with Paralympic medal-winner Róisín Ní Riain at hand to launch the event
The Limerick Island Swim 3.8km Challenge took place on Saturday, September 14 creating a spectacle in the Shannon waters as enthusiastic swimmers braved the unpredictable conditions of the river while raising funds for ADAPT House as the swim celebrated its tenth anniversary.
The swim takes competitors through some of Limerick’s most historic sites, starting near Barrington’s Hospital, athletes pass landmarks such as Baals Bridge and make their way through the famous Abbey River, encountering sites such as Artlunkard Boat Club and Thomond Park with swimmers getting the opportunity to take in a unique view of King John’s Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral, and the finishing in the location where Vikings first set foot in Limerick.
This year’s event was launched by Paralympic double-medalist Róisín Ní Riain, who cheered on competitors and her family, she said, “It’s absolutely brilliant to be out here this afternoon at the Island Swim and to watch a really, really close finish there between two of the guys that I trained with on a day to day basis.
“It’s great to see them out here having a good time and I’ve got both my sisters in the water still to come in as well. To be out here today and to meet everyone out here has really been great.”
In a special ceremony for the tenth anniversary, Limerick Narwhals presented commemorative photos to the first 11 swimmers to ever take part in the challenge. The event also raised funds for ADAPT House, a Limerick-based charity supporting women and children affected by domestic abuse.
A representative from ADAPT House emphasized the impact of the donations saying, “For a lot of women they leave their homes and they come with literally just what they have on them. So your donations go straight into helping those women feel more at home when they come to us and start their recovery journey.
“So I just wanted to thank you so, so much. Not only are you giving financial support to organisations, but you’re also helping raising awareness within the community that no one wants to tolerate domestic abuse.”
