Limerick Area Network on Violence Against Women to Mark 16 Days of Action Online

This year will see Limerick Area Network on Violence Against Women (LAN) move their work to mark the global movement, the 16 Days of Action Against Gender Based Violence, online.

The 16 Days of Action Against Gender Based Violence takes place every year from November 25th – December 10th. Each year LAN organises a number of educational and awareness raising events to mark the occasion. However, due to Covid-19 and restrictions put in place, this year LAN will move their efforts to social media using #16DaysLimerick to raise awareness around its work and to educate the public on how to support a loved one who may be living with domestic violence.

Each day, over the 16 Days, LAN member groups, from across a range of statutory and voluntary organisations, will release information on the workings of LAN, educational resources and national supports available to women experiencing domestic violence via their social media platforms using #16DaysLimerick. LAN are asking members of the public to help share this information on social media to ensure it has as wide a reach as possible.

LAN hope that by circulating this information online not only will it educate the general public around how to support a loved one they fear might be in a violent situation, but cruitally, they want to let the women of Limerick know that there are numerous local and national supports available to them if they are living with domestic violence.

LAN Chairperson and Executive Director of Rape Crisis Midwest, said, “While we are disappointed we cannot meet in person this year to mark the 16 Days of Action, we are delighted that we can carryout this important awareness raising campaign online and we would encourage the public to engage with the #16DaysLimerick posts on social media as they may end up being a lifeline for someone they know and love.”

About NCCWN Limerick Women’s Network

The Limerick Women’s Network aims to promote gender equality through its work with women who experience multiple forms of oppression. They provide an information and drop in service for women, and supply information on a range of issues such as health provision, screening services and Violence against Women services.  Additionally, they provide supports for women to return to education and training and to access employment and/or volunteering opportunities.  They work with all women but specifically our focus is on women who experience marginalisation and those from vulnerable communities.
