Local Limerick band PowPig won their spot as Limerick Music Qualifiers for The Irish Youth Music Awards

Local band PowPig won the regional qualifiers of the Irish Youth Music Awards (IYMAs) held at Limerick Youth Service (LYS) recently, with Adam Maloney honoured for his songwriting skills. Comprising of Anna Rooney, Leah O’Donnell, Laura Brennan & Andrea Mocanu, PowPig wowed LYS’ Lava Javas Youth Café with their songs ‘Sticky Teeth’ and ‘Birds of Paradise’ displaying their impressive vocal and instrumental skills.
‘Delighted!’ was the reply from drummer Laura Brennan when asked how she felt about winning this year’s local IYMAs.
‘The other acts were very good and to be voted number one by them was an honour,’ said Laura adding ‘tonight’s performances were a great reflection of the strong youth music scene in Limerick,’ said Laura.

The success of the band is all the more impressive as they are only together eight months having met at a Music Generation.

At the finals, PowPig will perform Aaron Maloney’s song, Wisdom after the Shannon teen won the songwriting category.

Limerick Youth Service would like to congratulate The Limerick band PowPig and Adam Maloney on their success and wish them the best of luck in the national finals which will take place on Saturday, April 21st at Croke Park, Dublin and will mark the start of Youth Work Ireland Week.

Now in their eleventh years, the IYMAs is a youth work music programme supported by Youth Work Ireland and RTE 2FM with the format introducing young people to all aspects of the music industry from on stage to behind the scenes. As part of the IYMAs programme, a team of young people will support PowPig in roles such as sound, lighting, photography, PR and transport to name but a few.  
Lava Javas Youth Café is located at LYS, 5 Lr. Glentworth St, Limerick is solely for teenagers (14-19yrs) who wish to spend time with friends or take part in innovative youth work programmes and activities.
Lava Javas is home to a thriving music scene and offers teenage musicians, rappers and singers an opportunity to gain valuable experience performing live on stage. Members of the Youth Work Ireland, Limerick Youth Service remains committed to supporting and encouraging young people to be active participants in shaping their futures.
