OVER 1300 people took part in 2013 Milford Hospice 10K Run Fundraiser in aid of Milford Hospice.
The inaugural event, which was the brainchild of staff in Deloitte’s office on Charlotte Quay in the city, took place in and around the campus of the University of Limerick.
Funds raised from the 2013 Milford Hospice 10K Run Fundraiser will go directly to supporting Milford’s palliative care services.
The run catered for different levels of ability and was a fully chip-timed event, which was won by John Shannon from Dundrum Athletic Club.
Organiser Niamh Keating, a senior manager in Deloitte in Limerick, said the public support for the event was “fantastic”.
“It went really, really well, fantastically well,” she explained. “We were very lucky with the weather, it was great. We were a little bit worried on Saturday night about the weather but it was okay on Sunday morning.
“It was a great success. We had over 1300 running or walking in the event, which was fantastic; we couldn’t believe it. We surpassed our expectations and there were 1500 people registered overall, those who just wanted to support Milford but couldn’t be there to run or walk.”
Mary Hogan, chairperson, Milford Hospice Friends, said the facility – which provides care and services across the Mid-West region – is “dependent on the funds raised from various events throughout the year, such as the one organised by Deloitte”.
“Community support is the backbone to the services being provided by Milford Care Centre and it is absolutely essential, particularly in this difficult economic climate,” she explained.
Athletic clubs from across Limerick helped out with the logistics of the event, as did the Civil Defence, Niamh explained.
“There was definitely great support for Milford, everyone really got behind it,” she explained.
“We are novices at organising this kind of event and we got a lot of support from all over Limerick, which was brilliant,” she added.
