‘Limerick Folktales’ Comic Fundraiser for Blue Box

Have you ever heard of the curse of Saint Munchin? Or the ghost of the Bishop’s Lady?  These folktales and more are included in Limerick Folktales, a comic book collection of 8 local stories illustrated by Limerick artist Hugh Mc Mahon who works as an artist and art therapist in the city. I had the honour of launching this comic book last week in Faber Studios on Henry Street and the launch was a huge success with many familiar Limerick faces coming out to support the project. The comic book is a celebration of local history and heritage, executed in an accessible comic book medium. The stories reflect something of the Limerick character and some of the folktales are nostalgic and romantic, whereas others are tragic but all the stories are told with an irreverent good humour. A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the comic book will be donated to The Blue Box Creative Learning Centre who work with schools and families in Limerick City and environs to provide space and to provide trained professionals to help guide our children through difficult times. Driven by innovative Arts Therapy programmes this ‘Self-help’ project was the realisation of a desire to bring interventions to children and young people that would help them to help themselves through difficult emotional and psychological issues.
