Limerick Youth Service was delighted to host a Youth Exchange programme last week as 12 young people from across Limerick City and County and 12 from St. Hilaire, France engaged in a programme of activities exploring citizenship and the differences and commonalities of urban and rural life. The background to this programme is unique as a group of young volunteers who have themselves participated in youth exchange opportunities with LYS gathered together over the past number of months to ‘give back’ based on their positive experiences. They recruited young teenagers from Limerick Youth Service Projects in Watergate, Ballinanty, Ballinacurra Weston, Rathkeale, Southill and Lava Java’s Youth Café. Highlights of the week included creative projects exploring the theme of citizenship through beat-boxing and music technology, puppet making and a recycle art project. Also the group took in the cultural treats Limerick and surrounds have to offer including sampling Limerick’s unique youth culture. The French group will return the hospitality over the Halloween Break when the Limerick group got to France to continue to broaden the intercultural experience.

So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
