A celebration of African culture will take place in Limerick city from May 17 to 24 with the number of events under Africa Week being increased this year to coincide with Limerick City of Culture. Limerick will enjoy some of the sights, sounds and flavours of its African communities with a fun filled weekend of events to celebrate Africa Week.

The programme includes the fifth annual Limerick Sportsfest/Sports Day at Crescent College in Dooradoyle on May 17, African storytelling for primary school groups and African drumming at Limerick City Library on May 21, a Sounds of Africa concert at St. Mary’s Cathedral on May 22 (see photos below), and a creative writing competition for secondary schools and an art competition for primary schools.

A symposium on the theme of Partners for Growth will be held at the Hunt Museum on Friday, May 23, where speakers will include Minister for Housing & Planning Jan O’Sullivan and former Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power, now head of Unicef Ireland. “The events and activities taking place this year will attempt to promote a positive image of Africa, highlight the Irish Aid programme in Africa, and will also have an education component,” said Deirdre Minogue of Limerick City and County Council. “We look forward to people from all different backgrounds joining us during Africa Week which takes on added significance this year as we celebrate being Ireland’s National City of Culture.”
