Home of Limerick woman Suzanne Roche gutted by fire – A Limerick family needs your help!

Founder of Indira Initiative, Suzanne Roche, has lost her home to a fire on Christmas Eve. Suzanne set up this charity to provide support to family’s who find themselves in difficulty. One element of the charity provides school books and uniforms at a reduced rate to Limerick parents who find they are struggling to meet the cost of sending a child to school – which can cost in excess of €750 per year. This service is based at 72 O’Connell Street with an additional charity shop based at 9 Wickham St which helps to raise funding to support the school book/uniform service. The Indira Initiative offers one-to-one tuition for primary and secondary and third level school students. The charity also delivered twenty hampers to people in need this past Christmas. Now, Suzanne has herself been hit by this sudden fire which has destroyed her home. The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault in the back bedroom where the couple’s four children were all due to sleep that night, a family tradition since they were babies. “If it had happened at three or four in the morning, they might all be gone,” said Suzanne. Suzanne, her husband Ger and four children are totally devastated with the loss of all their furniture and household appliances to the flames, as well as every Christmas present and other items of huge sentimental value including family photos, especially since she had due to financial pressures canceled her house insurance as recently as last October. Suzanne, who has helped out many families and children in need, now needs help herself. “I do things like this for people who find themselves in a situation where they don’t have anything but I never thought I would be here myself,” a distraught Suzanne tells me. She has lost everything and so Joseph Crowley along with close friends of Suzanne, Deirdre Organ, Rose Moloney have come up with a plan which they hope will provide a suitable and immediate rescue-plan for this very deserving family. The entire innards of their home have been destroyed by the fire, including all furniture, appliances and clothing. Deirdre and Rose are appealing for people to donate their time and for local businesses to provide the essentials to refit a home. They feel it is more convenient, practical and suitable to have items donated, and work done, than actual financial aid. They are hoping that a “drop-in-point” can be put in place, where everything from a ‘teaspoon’ to a ‘cupboard’ can be donated. People wanting to help can contact them at 086-3317190.   

On Thursday January 23 at 8.30pm in The Parlour on Thomas Street, Friends of the Roche Family held a Suzanne Roche Family Fundraiser event concert called ‘Songs for Recovery’. This was a great night’s entertainment with music from Unity Gospel Choir Limerick, Wiseguys, Dapper Duo, Michelle Grimes, The Diva’s. Jennifer Barron and many more.  Robbie Carey the general manager of The Parlour, stepped up and provided the organisers with the venue at no charge and laid on all the trimmings with music on all floors and lots of great raffle prizes as well.
