Limerick’s biggest Clean Up (TLC), Good Friday, April 3

Over 10,000 volunteers have signed up to Team Limerick Clean-up (TLC) to date. More than 10,000 Limerick residents and community groups have followed Paul O’Connell’s lead and signed up for the Team Limerick Clean-up event that will take place on Good Friday, April 3.

Entry for the large scale anti-litter campaign closed last week with a milestone 10,055 volunteers answering the call to take part. The TLC initiative will primarily take the form of a few hours of picking and cleaning, with Mr Binman crews to collect the litter that has been gathered on the day.

The idea for campaign emerged during a discussion over a cup of tea between JP McManus, tidy towns advocate Helen O’Donnell and Paul O’Connell. JP McManus tells me, “whilst this is our first year for the clean-up initiative, we’ve received a phenomenal response with over 10,000 people signing up.”

In the run-up to the day itself, there’s a considerable planning process involved to ensure everyone is up to speed with the logistics entailed and the Council has conducted a series of Information Meetings for volunteer leaders. Each individual group receives their own unique ref number in relation to their clean-up project and collection of their clean-up packs and then Mr Binman will collect all litter bags at certain collection points identified by each group in their area.

After the “clean-up” projects are over, refreshments will be served at a number of venues in key towns and the city centre and preparations are also underway for Limerick’s largest ever tea/coffee morning, which will take place at locations across the city and county following the Good Friday clean-up.

Commenting on the news, sponsor of TLC, JP McManus said; “We are absolutely delighted with the response we have received from people throughout Limerick. It has exceeded all our expectations and shows great spirit and pride in our county. We look forward to getting out and doing our bit on Good Friday and hopefully making this an annual occasion for everyone to enjoy.”

He added: “The closing date to register was March 23 and it promises to be a great day.”

Paul O’Connell explained, “This is more than just a clean-up initiative, it is also an opportunity for everyone involved to promote a sense of ‘can-do’ attitude. The post-event refreshments will provide a great way for people to meet up after the clean-up in a fun and social environment.”

TLC refreshments will be served at St Munchin’s Community Centre and other locations throughout the city and county – details of which will be announced next week.

The Team Limerick Clean-up initiative is co-ordinated by Limerick City and County Council, with the support of Mr Binman, the Limerick Leader and Live 95FM.
