Former Mayor Cllr Michael Sheahan 13000ft charity skydive

Former Metropolitan Mayor Cllr Michael Sheahan 13000ft charity Skydive took place on Sunday June 28, in aid of Midwest Spinabifida and Hydrocephalus Association, Limerick.

Cllr Michael Sheahan went out on a high at the end of term in office when he leaped from a plane 13,000ft Skydive at the Irish Parachute Club to raise awareness and much needed funds for the Midwest Spinabifida & Hydrocephalus Association, Limerick.

Cllr Sheahan, completed the Great Limerick Run 10K on behalf of the MWSA and then set his sights on the Ultimate Challenge: to leap out of a plane 3 miles above the ground and Freefall 2 Miles in 45 seconds at 120 MPH before opening the parachute at 5,000ft and flying to the ground.

Michael said “As Tina Turner would say Simply The Best the most amazing feeling in the world you can’t describe it you just have to do it”. Peter Breen, instructor said “ Michael was a natural born Skydiver”.  John Byrnes (Vice Chair) MWSA joining Michael in Freefall would like to sincerely thank Michael the former Mayor for his support during his year in office it is very much appreciated by all at MWSA.

The Midwest Spina Bifida Association & Hydrocephalus is a voluntary organisation. They provide services to over 100 families. The Limerick Branch of the Irish Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus came into being on October 26th, 1968. in the early 80’s, the MWSA was formed, they are an independent charity and service provider in the Midwest, all funds raised go directly towards their services to help, assist and improve the lives of their members and families. Their 2014 audited accounts show that they are less than 35% funded by the HSE, and they must rely heavily on fundraising to continue to provide much needed services in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary.

The Midwest Spina Bifida Association & Hydrocephalus say: “Our services are FREE OF CHARGE and include physiotherapy (including assessment and intervention), orthotics, counselling for members and family, special bikes and equipment, computer classes, cookery, leadership and self awareness development, summer camps, swimming and art lessons, wheelchair sports (rugby, basketball, boccia, snooker, rowing, horseback riding, and many more) billiard lessons, paid expenses to families attending clinics in Dublin, paid extra tuition, parental support, social activities, respite, Wheels in Motion social group, leadership and confidence building courses, sexuality awareness courses, drug awareness training, and much more!”

Now they are asking you to take on the Ultimate Challenge, Skydive and raise vital funds for MWSA. Their goal is to have 100 participants take on the 13,000ft Skydive by end of September.
