Established by former Coláiste Mhichíl student JP McManus, eight scholarships are awarded each year at the rate of €6,750 per annum for the full term of the undergraduate programme. 209 scholarships have been awarded to date.

The Guest of Honour at the ceremony was former Coláiste Mhichíl pupil, Limerick Senior Hurler and PwC All – Star Hurler of the Year for 2022 Diarmaid Byrnes.

Diarmaid said: “Don’t underestimate your value and stay honest to yourself. Being yourself, the bright students that you are, will stand the test of time and you’ll go a long way.

“If I can offer any advice going forward, it’s to be yourself, be nice, be honest and enjoy it.”

Now in its twenty-sixth year, the scholarship scheme is administered by four trustees, – Coláiste Mhichíl retired principals Noel Earlie and Eddie Fallon, chartered accountant Gerard Boland and retired sales manager and former All-Star hurler Pat Hartigan.

The JP McManus Scholarships, which are administered by a number of trustees, were first established in 1996 and since then a total of 209 students have been awarded scholarships to fund their third-level education.

Former student Eoghan Moore, who was awarded a scholarship in 2020, spoke at the awards ceremony on behalf of all 24 recipients.

He said confirmation, in June 2020, that scholarships would be awarded despite the closure of schools and the cancellation of traditional Leaving Cert exams was a major boost for students attending Coláiste Mhichíl who faced uncertainty.

“On behalf of all 24 recipients, I would like to express my gratitude to JP and Noreen McManus for keeping the door open on the scholarships for us at a time when many doors were closed because of Covid-19,” he said.

“Winning a JP McManus scholarship is a great moment. Not only does it give you financial security over the course of your four-year degree it also provides a gateway into employment opportunities,” added Eoghan who is currently studying Electronic and Computer Engineering at University of Limerick.
