The sun shone on Limerick City as the 2024 Regeneron Great Limerick Run took thousands of runners on an amazing tour of Limerick!
Today, the 15th edition of the Regeneron Great Limerick Run lit up the streets of Limerick, with more than 14,000 participants spanning all event categories. From seasoned marathoners to casual walkers in the 6-mile event, the thrill of accomplishment united everyone as they crossed the finish line on O’Connell Street. Limerick’s streets were vibrant with the cheers of over 45,000 spectators, who provided enthusiastic support and encouragement as they watched friends and family members stride by.
As thousands graced the streets of Limerick, the sun came with them as participants took on a Marathon, Half Marathon, and 6-mile races.
The largest mass participation event outside of Dublin, the Regeneron Great Limerick Run had the city buzzing with excitement as the streets were flooded with participants from all over Ireland.
Leading the pack, finishing with a time of 2:24:10, Romanian-born runner, Tudor Mircea Moldovan, representing Clonliffe Harriers AC spoke to I Love Limerick as he reflected on the incredible achievement.
Tudor told I Love Limerick’s Richard Lynch, “Oh, it was very tough. It was such a tough day. I passed very fast in the first half. I passed in 69:47, very fast, and then the heat hit me very badly. So I tried to hang on and, and yeah, I finished in 2:24. It was okay. It was good.”
Having won the previous year’s race, Mircea Moldovan explained this year was tough as he had disappointing outings earlier in the year, “Oh, I trained a lot. I trained a lot. I had a very bad beginning of the year, I dropped out in the national 50K, I had a bad half marathon, but I trained very hard and I knew that I could win this. It was in my legs.”
When asked about his previous accomplishments in the race, he said, “I won last year and I hope I’m going to come back next year as well.”
Many of those taking part chose to take the opportunity to raise much-needed funds for chosen charities, with Sliabh Wells, Managing Director of The Bear Group who is the Event Organiser noting the importance of this aspect of the race at this year’s launch event.Sliabh said, “Last year was an amazing year for the event. We saw record numbers of people participating, and with these the previous fundraising records were all exceeded. Our fundraising platform Eventmaster allows all participants to fundraise for a charity of their own choice, and we expect this year’s efforts to be more than €250K.”
