The community came together for the annual 3For3 Breast Cancer Awareness walk, which saw hundreds walk Limerick’s three bridges to raise vital funds for the  Symptomatic Breast Unit at University Hospital Limerick (UHL).

Since 2018, the 3for3 event has brought communities together and has raised almost €150,000 for the Symptomatic Breast Unit at University Hospital Limerick (UHL), as well as shining a light on breast cancer awareness.

The 3for3 Walk was founded by Caroline Maloney, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and was inspired by her own journey through the UHL, deciding to give something back.

Caroline told I Love Limerick,  ”I just want to come on and say a huge thank you to all the people that came out on the Streets of Limerick today that joined us for the three Bridges walk for our breast cancer unit in UHL. Hundreds of people came out to support us: women, children, men, furry friends, and babies.”

Speaking about the importance of the event, Caroline said, “ It was just wonderful to see so many people, as we all know, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we were here today to raise breast cancer awareness and also to support our local hospital, our symptomatic breast clinic in Limerick.”

All proceeds from the event go directly to UHL’s breast clinic, where Caroline herself was treated. She said, “ I myself had breast cancer in 2014. I was only in my forties, and I had five young children. I suppose the reason all the money is going to the symptomatic breast unit is because I was treated out there under Shauna Tome. She was my breast surgeon, and I had a really positive experience, and a positive journey throughout – the whole team’s kindness in oncology and in the breast clinic. I just thought maybe to do something to help them out there.”

Since the first walk in 2023, 3For3 Breast Cancer Awareness Walk has raised almost €150,000 thanks to the generosity of the public and participants in the walk.

Caroline said, “ I think three for three is for ‘our city, our clinic, your cure’, and three for three is a simple walk as we’ve known today. Everybody could come, everybody participated. It’s non-competitive, we’ve had a wonderful day, and the three bridges were simply wonderful with hundreds of people walking behind us all out there to spread our awareness.”

She said the funds raised can really make a difference to the service provided in Limerick, “ This is an incredible walk. It brings the city together, and it’s raising vital funds for the clinic in UHL. Every penny goes to the symptomatic breast clinic, and they have bought equipment, they have done up their dressing rooms and fitting rooms. I know from speaking to Professor Shauna Tome, they would not have really got this money too easily.”
