Limerick met with an in-form Cork at the TUS Gaelic Grounds on Saturday, March 7, where the Treaty men took the spoils in front of 18,744 supporters to stop Cork’s winning run.

A repeat of the 2025 Munster Final, which Cork won on penalties, fans at the TUS Gaelic Grounds were always going to be in for a hard-fought game with another meeting in the Munster Championship marked on calendars for April 26 in Parc Uí Chaoimh, the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A had the feel of a championship game.

Limerick took a one-point lead at the half in what was a tightly contested opening 35 minutes, which saw an early Limerick goal for Shane O’Brien, some great point-taking, and the referee showing six yellow cards in a tough opening half of hurling.

Limerick led 1-09 to 0-11 at the break, before a second half which showed their capabilities, putting 2-10 past the visiting Cork side and holding them to just nine second-half scores. Goals from Cathal O’Neill and a penalty by Aidan O’Connor sealed the win, with Aaron Gillane proving a handful for the Rebels, winning the crucial penalty.

Standout performance by Captain, Cian Lynch, helped the Shannonsiders to their dominant victory. Lynch was named man of the match after a commanding display.

Following the win, Limerick manager, John Kiely, said the key takeaways from the game are more than the victory itself. He said, “ Not so much about the result, really. I think for us, we’ve been working hard the last number of weeks, and it’s about bringing what we’re doing in training to matches when they matter, and just trying to build from week to week. I’d be very happy with our progression through the last four games, in particular in terms of the improvements that we’re seeing, incremental improvements.”

Following three busy weekends for the Limerick Senior Hurling Team, Kiely says finishing the game without injury is also a positive, as they now look toward hosting Galway, who had an impressive win over Kilkenny.

“ One of the standout pieces for me is we didn’t pick up another injury tonight on the back of the three games, three weeks in a row. That’s a really, really great sign of the work that Adrian O’Brien has been doing with the lads from a strength conditioning perspective, how well the lads have been actually adhering to what they’re being asked to do in that area, and the work of our medical team as well, I think they’ve done a really, really great job.”

When asked about hopes for the league final, Kiely reminded reporters that the challenge of Galway is stil lto come. He said, “It would be nice to get there, but we’ve got a big challenge ahead of us; we’re acutely aware of that.” Noting the scoreline in Galway’s 0-35 – 0-17 win over Kilkenny, Kiely said, “That says it all, doesn’t it? That’s a serious scoreline. I’ve seen them over the last number of weeks. Their energy has been very, very high, and they’re a very formidable team, so we’re gonna have to earn it.”
