Carmel MacDohmnaill also brought home gold as part of the winning W80 Irish team in the women’s uphill event.

Limerick’s John Kinsella, Carmel MacDomhnaill, and Seán Quirke have all enjoyed a successful outing at the 2026 World Masters Mountain Running Championships in Janské Lázně, Czechia.

The Limerick athletes took home multiple team medals in the 2026 championships, taking part in uphill and up-and-down races at the global event.

Back 2 Boston runner and coach, John Kinsella, was part of the Irish M45 team that claimed gold in the uphill race, covering 7.5 kilometres with 850 metres of elevation.

Carmel MacDohmnaill also brought home gold as part of the winning W80 Irish team in the women’s uphill event.

It has been a successful racing period for the MacDomhnaill family with Carmel’s daughters, twins Sorcha and Íde taking second and third place in the 2026 VHI Dublin Women’s Mini Marathon on Sunday, May 31.

The success continued in the up-and-down race, where Kinsella and Bilboa AC’s Sean Quirke helped Team Ireland secure silver in the M45 category over the challenging nine-kilometre course featuring 550 metres of elevation.

MacDomhnaill would then go on to add a second gold medal to her collection in the up-and-down race, where the W80 team Ireland group once again claimed top honours.

The 2026 World Masters Mountain Running Championships took place from June 26 to 28 in the Czech mountain town of Janské Lázně, located in the Krkonoše Mountains.

The championships featured three race formats designed to test different mountain running skills, including the uphill race, the long-distance event and the up-and-down race.

Speaking about a “proud day” for team Ireland, following their first gold win in the tournament, Kinsella said, “Team Ireland M45 World Mountain Running Champions in the Uphill race. Great start to a competitive weekend of racing. What a battle with Ian Conroy and Eoin Flynn just to be in the top 3 Irish. 2 Irish Mountain Running legends and a pleasure to share the podium with them.”
