31 new bus shelters are set to be built across Limerick city and county throughout 2024 and 2025, after Limerick City & County Council’s Active Travel team was allocated €900,000 for Bus Shelter Enabling Works.
The funding, which has been issued by the National Transport Authority (NTA), will see twenty bus shelters constructed in county Limerick, with a further eleven earmarked for the metropolitan area.
Work on assessing the exact sites for the shelters in each location is already underway within the Active Travel department. The funding will enable works to be carried out across more than 30 locations across the city and county, with seven in the Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District, six in the Newcastle West Municipal District, seven in the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District, and 11 across the Metropolitan Municipal District.
Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Councillor Gerald Mitchell said, “Last year’s rollout of bus shelters in both rural and urban areas of Limerick was a huge success. These shelters are a vital resource for many communities as people look to avail of enhanced local public transport services, in line with local and national transport policy. Limerick is continuing to upgrade and enhance its transport infrastructure at a pace and a standard that is of the envy to many other areas across the country.”
