The 33rd celebration of Ukrainian Independence Day in Limerick was marked by a warm and heartfelt community gathering, organised by dedicated volunteers with the support of Limerick City and County Council and DORAS. The event, held on August 24, brought together people from diverse backgrounds, highlighting the spirit of unity and support that characterises Limerick’s vibrant multicultural community.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran expressed his solidarity with the Ukrainian community and commended the city’s ongoing efforts to foster inclusivity and cultural exchange emphasising, “the importance of standing together in times of need and reaffirmed Limerick’s commitment to supporting all communities, including those affected by conflict and displacement.”

The event saw a significant turnout from the Ukrainian community, many of whom came to express their gratitude to the Irish society for their unwavering support during challenging times. It was a touching display of appreciation, with attendees sharing heartfelt stories and expressing thanks to their Irish hosts for the hospitality and assistance extended to them.

Representatives from various communities, including the Irish, Polish, and African communities, also joined in the celebrations, showcasing the diversity and unity that make Limerick such a unique and welcoming place. Traditional Ukrainian music, dance, and cultural performances added to the festive atmosphere, allowing attendees to immerse themselves in Ukrainian culture and history.

Organised with the help of Limerick City and County Council and DORAS, a local organization dedicated to supporting migrants and promoting diversity, the event was a testament to the power of community collaboration. It demonstrated how different cultural groups can come together to celebrate shared values of freedom, independence, and mutual respect.

The celebration of Ukrainian Independence Day in Limerick was not just a cultural event; it was a symbol of solidarity and friendship between the Ukrainian people and the wider Limerick community. As the day concluded, there was a strong sense of unity and a renewed commitment to continue supporting each other in the future.

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
