Limerick actress Ruth Negga has been named Best Supporting Actress at the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards for her performance as Clare Bellow in the film Passing. The awards were held on Sunday, March 6 in Santa Monica, California. Unfortunately, Limerick star Ruth could not attend the awards due to rehearsals for her upcoming role in Macbeth on Broadway, opposite none other than Daniel Craig. but she accepted her award with a video acceptance speech.

Accepting her Independent Spirit Award via video link, Ruth said, “My cheeks hurt because I can’t stop smiling! This is a really lovely honour.

“I would like to share this with the entire cast and crew of Passing. Nothing can be created in isolation without anybody else, we create in solidarity with others, so I feel like this is an award for all of us.”

Ruth also expressed solidarity with the people of Ukraine at the end of her acceptance speech.

The Limerick actress starred in the powerful drama Passing alongside Tessa Thompson, André Holland, Bill Camp, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, and Alexander Skarsgård. 

The film is based in 1920’s New York City, where a black woman finds her world upended when her life becomes intertwined with a former childhood friend who is passing as a white person, portrayed bt Ruth Negga. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival on January 30, 2021, and was put on Netflix last November. The film received critical acclaim, praising the performance of Ruth Negga.
