Limerick’s community will rally together on Sunday, October 19 to take part in the 3for3 Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

Limerick City is set to turn pink for the annual 3for3 Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, which will bring the community together on Sunday, October 19.
Since 2018, the 3for3 event has brought communities together and has raised almost €150,000 for the Symptomatic Breast Unit at University Hospital Limerick (UHL), as well as shining a light on breast cancer awareness.
The 3for3 Walk was founded by Caroline Maloney, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and was inspired by her own journey through the UHL, deciding to give something back.
Caroline told I Love Limerick, “3for3 Walk is a breast cancer charity walk. We founded it in 2018 as a result of me being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014.
“My journey went through the UHL breast clinic, and it was very positive, so I decided that I’d try and do something positive and give something back to the clinic.”
What began as an idea after walking the Three Bridges Walk in Limerick with her husband, has now become one of the city’s most loved charity events.
Caroline explains, “It’s basically a three-kilometre walk at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, the 19th of October. All proceeds go to the Symptomatic Breast Unit in Limerick.”

She added, “ We walked the bridges, myself and my husband one day, and it was three kilometres, the whole thing behind the ritual was that it’s non-competitive, so everybody can get out, children can do it, the elderly, all ages can come, and a lot of people bring their furry friends as well.”
Since its launch, more than 1,000 participants have taken part each year, with the funds raised already making a tangible difference. Money has been used to refurbish treatment and dressing rooms as well as purchase vital surgical equipment, including the Ligasure Exact device for precise dissection.
Caroline credits the generosity of the people of Limerick and beyond, she said, “ This is an incredible walk. It brings the city together, and it’s raising vital funds for the clinic in UHL. Every penny goes to the symptomatic breast clinic and they have bought equipment, hey have done up their dressing rooms and fitting rooms.
“I know from speaking to Professor Shauna Tome, they would not have really got this money too easily. So as of today, we’ve raised nearly €150,000, and that is down to the people.”
Registration is open at www.threeforthree.ie or at any Hook & Ladder store, with donations also welcome.
