6th European Encontro of Maracatu

Here’s a glimpse at what to expect, taken at the 5th European Encontro of Maracatu in Cologne

Maracatu Ilha Brilhante is hosting the 6th European Maracatu Encontro, which will be held between the 25th and 27th of July in Limerick City. This is the largest gathering of Maracatu players and dancers outside of Brazil. Over the weekend participants will take part in workshops with the best Brazilian percussionists and dancers, perform on stage and take part in a grand finale parade through the streets of Limerick.

The ‘Encontro’ or gathering is a unique celebration of Maracatu, which is a type of cultural spectacle from Pernambuco in the northeast of Brazil. Drummers and dancers from Europe and Brazil are gathering in Limerick to take part in workshops by celebrated Maracatu masters from Brazil.

As part of the weekend the groups taking part in the gathering like to show off their skills. Six of the finest groups from all over Europe will perform on Saturday 27th July at The Stables Club, University of Limerick from 9pm. Tickets (€5) can be bought on the door.

Simply playing on stage is not enough for the participants. When they arrive in a new city they like to show as many people as possible what Maracatu is all about. On Sunday the 27th a thunderous percussive and colourful spectacle will parade through the streets of Limerick culminating in a performance at People’s Park. The parade begins at 1pm from where O’Connell Street meets Thomas Street.
