Figures released by the Central Statistics Office have shown that almost 900 new-build social homes are at the design or construction phase in Limerick City and County, part of the 26,684 social homes at various stages of construction nationally.

The figures, running up to the end of June 2025, the Government believe, show strong growth and robust pipelines across both delivery streams. The latest Construction Status Report (CSR) details new-build social housing activity by each local authority, showing nationally, 26,684 social homes were at various stages of design and construction at the end of June 2025.

The reports show that in Limerick City and County, there are 876 social homes at various stages of design or construction by the end of Q2 2025; nationally, the delivery of new-build social homes is up almost 54 per cent when comparing the first half of 2024 to 2025.

Welcoming the figures,  Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne said, “These figures demonstrate that our efforts to accelerate the delivery of social housing, particularly new-build homes are having an impact. I remain firmly committed to sustaining progress in Limerick City and County and throughout the country.  In July, I made a significant move to a Single Stage Approval Process for social housing projects under €200 million. This will accelerate delivery and support the achievement of our ambitious targets, and was widely welcomed by our local authorities.

“While today’s focus is on the numbers, it is ultimately about the people behind them. As Minister, I have the privilege of travelling throughout the country and witnessing first-hand the profound impact that a permanent, secure home has on individuals and families. I want homes built at pace and at scale across all types, social, affordable, cost rental and private.”

“We are now constructing more social housing than at any point since the 1970s, and I am determined to ensure this progress continues.”
