Researchers from University of Limerick hosted a special event to share experiences from the ComExPain trial, a community-based study focused on supporting older adults living with musculoskeletal pain. Following a public callout, over 90 adults from the Midwest were recruited to take part in this study into chronic pain in older adults, and how exercise can help alleviate this pain. Led by Professor Karen McCreesh, the ComExPain feasibility trial, supported by Chronic Pain Ireland and funded by the Health Research Board, explored how specialised exercise classes delivered in local setting could support older people living with chronic pain. 92 people took part in Yoga, Pilates and Aqua classes delivered by UL-trained trainers from Limerick Sports Partnership. Barriers to being active include fear of how safe it is, lack of skilled support, and a lack of exercise opportunities designed with the needs of people with chronic pain in mind. The aim of this project has been to fill this gap. This event highlighted the importance of community involvement in pain research. The event brought together researchers, participants, and local partners to deliver the findings of the research and to celebrate the work of those who took part. Former Governor of the Central Bank Professor Patrick Honohan has been awarded an honorary doctorate by University of Limerick. One of Ireland’s leading economists, Professor Honohan was conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Economic Science by UL’s Chancellor Professor Brigid Laffan at a ceremony in Plassey House this Wednesday. Hailed as a ‘towering figure in Irish economic thinking’, the Dublin native was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland in 2009, just as the country was entering the most severe financial crisis in its history. Professor Honohan played a pivotal role in helping to restore stability to a financial system that had been teetering on the edge. An honorary professor of economics at Trinity College Dublin, Professor Honohan has taught at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including the London School of Economics and University of California. His career has included positions at the IMF and the World Bank, while he also spent seven years as a research professor at Ireland's Economic and Social Research Institute.
