A must for food lovers everywhere – a guided shopping tour of Ireland’s biggest farmers market; the Milk Market in Limerick city followed by cooking and dining. The next Market Walk is coming up on May 25th where, on meeting early for Italian coffee and freshly baked scones, Food writer and cook Valerie O’Connor will take food lovers around the award wining marketplace to select ingredients from a range of artisan producers to create a delicious three course lunch back in the Abbey Cookery School on Georges Quay. The school is fully equipped with a state of the art demonstration kitchen as well as a hands on kitchen where participants can cook along in pairs under the guidance of their trained chefs. When all your dishes are complete, cooks enjoy their efforts together with a sit-down meal and wine, it’s a full day of food heaven and all in a city centre location.

“Most cookery schools are in rural settings and require travel and high costs of accommodation as well as time planning”, says Valerie “We have also found, talking to food lovers in other classes that some people don’t have the confidence to shop for what they want so would love to be shown what’s where and how to select the best produce at a farmers market. The Milk Market is such an attraction and with 6-7000 shoppers converging under it’s tent-like roof every Saturday, the hustle and bustle can be intimidating if you don’t know what you want”.

Valerie O’Connor has had her finger in many pies in the food world since she set up her blog www.valskitchen.com back in the early days of 2006. From restaurant reviewer for the lauded Bridgestone Guides to guest critic on Masterchef Ireland and being invited to speak at many food events, Valerie’s presence in the food world goes from strength to strength. With her new focus on healthy, delicious foods she is delighted to have been taken on by the new city centre Abbey Cookery School in Limerick as chef and market specialist.
