ADAPT Limerick GoFundMe Campaign to raise much-needed funds

Limerick-based charity ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services have set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise much-needed funds for the charity. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and changed living circumstances over the past year, domestic abuse incidence numbers have skyrocketed over the past year. With Mother’s Day looming, ADAPT would also like to gift each mother with a bouquet as an extra special pick-me-up at this very difficult time in their lives.

Communities around Ireland need these supports now more than ever and these services need support now more than ever. Adapt provides services to women experiencing domestic abuse and their children. ADAPT’s services are available to all women and children regardless of where they are from, their racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual orientation.

2,445 new women and 486 new children had contacted a domestic violence service from September to December last year, equating to 611 new women and 122 new children every month, or 20 new women and 4 children every day. The numbers will only increase the longer this lockdown continues; therefore, the necessary services must be funded and supported to carry out the tremendous continuous work by ADAPT.

A substantial annual budget is required to provide the current level of services to ADAPT, with several statutory bodies contributing to funding various service elements. These include HSE, FAS, Limerick City Council, Pobal, Department of Education and Science, The Family Support Agency and the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The remaining funds required to sustain the current level of service must be raised through fundraising activities. Funding to address gaps in services and to fund capital projects also must be submitted through local fundraising.

Adapt provides services to women experiencing domestic abuse and their children.

ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services is a voluntary organisation that was set up in 1974 to provide a wide range of support to women survivors of domestic abuse and their children across Limerick City and County. ADAPT runs the largest refuge in the country providing emergency accommodation for women and children who have to leave their homes because of domestic abuse. It also provides a wide range of outreach services for women who are not staying in the refuge including 24-hour helpline support, 1-2-1 support in relation to issues arising as a result of domestic abuse e.g. financial and housing concerns, accompaniment to court to seek legal protection, support groups for women who are or have been in an abusive relationship, and educational opportunities for women survivors of domestic abuse.

ADAPT also provides a range of support for children and young people who are or have lived with domestic abuse. These services include helpline support, one to one support in relation to their experience, emotional and practical support in relation to their concerns, group work programmes for young people, educational support and a play therapy service. They also work with young people in the general community to promote healthy relationships which are based on equality, dignity, and mutual respect. They do this by running a Healthy Relationships Programme with young people in schools and youth groups across the region.

Please spread the word, donate, and contribute to making a difference for all women and children in Ireland who may have roofs over their heads but have no place to call home.
