ADAPT

ADAPT domestic abuse services is a voluntary organisation providing support and resources to women survivors of domestic abuse and their children throughout Limerick City and County. Having been set up in 1974, ADAPT now runs the largest refuge in the country and provide emergency accommodation for women and children who have to leave their homes due to domestic abuse.

In addition to providing refuge, there are also a number of other services available, including a 24-hour helpline, one-to-one support in relation to issues arising as a result of domestic abuse e.g. financial and housing concerns, accompaniment to court to seek legal protection, support groups for women who are or have been in an abusive relationship, and educational opportunities for women survivors of domestic abuse.

ADAPT also provide support for young people and children who have been affected by domestic abuse, ranging from one to one support in relation to their experience, emotional and practical support in relation to their concerns, group work programmes for young people, to educational support and a play therapy service.

Furthermore, ADAPT run their Healthy Relationships Programme to promote relationships based on mutual respect, equality and dignity to young people through schools and youth groups.

Of course, raising awareness of domestic abuse in the general population, and provide individuals and groups with the knowledge needed to recognise domestic abuse, and respond appropriately to women survivors of domestic abuse and their children. This is achieved through a variety of different mediums, such as public awareness campaigns, development of good practice guidelines, and providing training to raise awareness.

While ADAPT receive funding from different local and national bodies for various elements of their services, the remaining funds necessary to sustain the level of service, and to generate capital projects need to be fundraised locally.
