Adare village has been chosen as one of Poetry Ireland’s ‘Poetry Towns’, as part of an initiative that will see over a hundred free poetry events happen across twenty Irish towns between September 10-18, 2021.

A poet laureate will be appointed in each Poetry Town, who will be required to write a poem about their town and its people, to be presented to the towns residents at a series of online events. These events will include performances from musicians, artists and poets.

A wide range of poetry events will take place in all Poetry Towns, from workshops to poetry displays, as well as physical activities called ‘Poems that Move You’. Local businesses will also play a part in the event, distributing ‘pocket poems’ to customers.

A full programme of events, as well as the names of poet laureates, will be revealed in late August.

“The idea behind Poetry Town is to celebrate the many vibrant towns and communities across the island of Ireland, through poetry, collaboration and communal experiences,” says Niamh O’Donnell, the Director of Poetry Ireland.

“Over the past 18 months, many of us have become more aware of what’s around us – from local parks or nature walks, to landmarks and monuments, to the stories held within the collective memory of our communities. There is poetry waiting to be uncovered in our surroundings and our everyday lives.

“We are excited to invite individuals, families and communities to join their Poetry Towns in a vibrant celebration of the pride in their locality, the value and importance of our heritage, and the strength and diversity in our towns and rural areas.”

So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
