The opening was made possible through dedicated fundraising efforts by the school’s Parents Association and generous community support and promises to enhance the educational experience for children of all abilities.

The sensory space, equipped with calming lights, tactile panels, and comfortable seating, provides a soothing environment where students can relax, self-regulate, and recharge during the school day. This initiative reflects the school’s commitment to inclusivity and prioritising student wellbeing.

Siobhan Kennedy, Principal of Ahane National School, expressed her enthusiasm for the new addition, “The sensory space is a wonderful resource that will benefit all of our children, particularly those who need a little extra support to thrive. We’re deeply grateful to the Parents Association and our local community including Unity Credit Union for making this dream a reality. It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we all work together for our school.”

The Parents Association played a pivotal role in bringing the sensory space to fruition by spearheading various fundraising events throughout the year including a hugely successful school sports event and family fun evening.

Chairperson of the Parents Association, Aine Kearney, said, “We’re delighted to see the sensory area come to life. We have a very active Parents Association who worked hard at organising fundraising events to support the development of the new space. We know it will have a positive and lasting impact on their wellbeing and learning environment and we’re looking forward to hosting more events to support the school throughout the forthcoming year.”

The official opening ceremony was attended by members of the school community and parents who had the opportunity to see the new facility. The sensory space is now fully operational and ready to welcome children seeking a moment of calm during their busy school day.

Ahane National School, located in Lisnagry has a long and rich history dating back to its founding in 1823 by Sir Richard Bourke, a former Governor of New South Wales and one of the founders of Melbourne, Australia. The school recently celebrated its bicentenary with a week of special events, highlighting its role in the local community and its evolution over two centuries.

Today, it serves over 150 children in a modern, well-equipped facility, under its motto, Ní neart go cur le chéile.
