Colin Breslin, Regional Managing Director of ALDI Ireland said, “We are delighted to receive planning permission today from Limerick County Council to open a new store in Moyross. Every new ALDI store brings greater choice, quality and value to shoppers, which during a cost-of-living crisis, is arguably more important now than ever before.”

Supermarket giant Aldi has broke ground on a new €7 million store in Moyross.

The company have applied for full planning permission on the New Road (formerly Knockalisheen Road) in Ballynanty More.

Due to open in 2024, the store will create welcome employment opportunities in Moyross. 50 construction jobs and 30 in-store roles will become available.

The state-of-the-art supermarket building will be powered entirely by green electricity and will feature some 88 square metres of solar panelling on the roof. The spacious car park will have four free-to-use electric vehicle charging points and plenty of bicycle parking.

Aldi is the second supermarket chain to set up shop in Moyross after frozen food retailer Iceland opened at Watch House Cross in 2017.

The opening of another supermarket is a positive breakthrough for the northside regeneration area, with many locals taking to social media in praise.

“More jobs equal a happier community,” said one Facebook user. “Glad to see some good news.”

“Delighted. No more travelling to the other side of town,” added another.

Local councillor, John Costello, commented, “This is great news for the area, which is making great strides lately. Let’s hope this is the beginning of better things to come.”

Earlier this year, construction began on the Coonagh to Knockalisheen Road, or New Road, following persistent lobbying from Moyross residents. The new road is key to the successful regeneration of the area.

Northside Limerick councillor, Sharon Benson, said of the new Aldi store, “this is one outcome of building the new road. Well done to the Moyross community for their hard work in ensuring that it was built. A fight worth fighting – this is only the start. Hopefully, many more jobs will be delivered in the area.”
